We spent a great weekend in our children's nation's capital (C&J are Aussies after all). Our accommodation deal included a family pass to three attractions including Questacon - the fantastic science museum; Cockington Green - a Lilipution village; and a tour of the Australian Institute of Sport - where our car broke down.
Yes that's right, our beloved Passat did a VW and rolled to a stop (fortunately just in a car park rather than on the freeway with a truck up our backside!) and refused to restart. Luckily this was before the AIS tour started so the kids and Flick had something to do while Dave waited about 90 minutes for the NRMA breakdown guy to arrive, who, after plugging his iPhone into the car scratched his head and called for a tow. This took another three quarters of an hour, so we split up, with Charlie and Dad having their first tow truck ride to the VW dealership (by then closed for the weekend) while James and Flick took a taxi back to the hotel.
Two days later, after a lot of bussing around Canberra, we picked up the car (minutes before we were due to rent one) and headed home. Fortunately not significantly out of pocket as the fault turned out to be the subject of a fuel injector recall and the repair was at no cost. The extra time gave us the opportunity to see a couple more attractions including the National War Memorial, National Museum and the National Gallery, where Dave briefly attended the Turner exhibition while Flick and the kids enjoyed the sculpture garden and other attractions.
The boys had a great time and many of the attractions we attended are really geared up for the kids.
