And the other cottage project...

Our friend Steve's son  who is growing up fast decided he'd rather have a spa than a cubby house so he kindly donated his to our boys.  Steve disassembled it and we brought it over flatpacked.  It sat in pieces for a while till I managed to get a clear weekend at the end of January to concrete in the posts, level the base and put the deck on.  Steve then gave me a hand to reassemble it.  Flick decked it out with kitchenware and a table and chairs she found in council cleanup.*

Thanks Steve!

In the house, meanwhile, we'd been living without a splashback in the kitchen until I finally bought a sheet of villaboard, chopped it up and glued it to the wall to create a flat surface.  Our former neighbour Frank, a retired tiler, then volunteered to help install tiling that we had found in the house when we moved in - they're actually mosaic pool tiles glued to fabric backing.  For what is our temporary kitchen until we do the main renovation it looks great - thanks Frank!

Holding up the villabord while the glue dried.  It was a bit hard to cook that night.

*Council cleanup happens about twice a year in most suburbs in Sydney.  You can chuck out pretty much any old junk and the council takes it away.  However, before that happens people drive by, pick through your junk and take what they want.  There are guys who collect and restore old appliances; scrap metal specialists and more recently Flick, who has picked up toys, prams, books, doors and the odd Country Road solid timber dining table (which we're using as our old one was the wrong shape for the new house).  We are constantly amazed at the quality (and quantity) of perfectly useful stuff, often in immaculate condition that people are willing to throw out.  In the well heeled suburbs fairly close to us they can't seem to be bothered to EBay what they no longer want.
